A mastopexy (breast lift), is a procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. As a woman ages, skin loses some elasticity which can cause the breasts to lose their natural shape and firmness. This procedure is designed to elevate the breasts and give them a more youthful appearance. A breast lift may also be completed in conjunction with breast enlargement surgery (augmentation). The procedure takes approximately two to three hours to perform depending on the amount of sagging; the incision usually turns white and can be quite inconspicuous in approximately three to six months. Most patients experience very little bruising and can return to work within four to five days.
Reasons for Considering a Breast Lift:
- Elevate the breasts due to sagging caused by the effects of aging and gravity.
- Firm the breasts if they have lost substance due to pregnancy and subsequent breast-feeding.
- Re-align your nipples/areolas if they point down or to the side.
- Bring back natural suppleness after weight loss.
General Procedure
Mastopexy (breast lifting) is one of the most artistic surgeries performed by plastic surgeons. This is definitely not a “one fits all” surgery; the patient’s degree of droop (ptosis), skin quality, breast shape, chest wall shape, asymmetries, and patient desired result are all important in creating the ultimate shape of the breast. Remember that the skin itself stretches, and using only the skin to perform the lift will result in a less permanent result. Any tension on the incision line will result in a widened scar. Dr. Virden performs his breast lifts with this in mind, taking care to minimize the tension on the scar and manipulate the tissue to create a fuller breast on top. Depending on the amount of sagging, the incision may be as simple as around the areola (Circumareolar) to a “lollipop shaped” scar. Dr. Virden rarely performs the old-style “anchor shaped” incision.
Recovery Process
Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and recovery time. Bandages are applied right after surgery to aid the healing process and to minimize movement of the breasts. Once the bandages are removed, the patient will need to wear a specialized surgical bra for several weeks. Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with surgery which can be treated with oral medication. While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the post-operative directions given by the surgeon.
