Ear Surgery Procedure

Ear Surgery In Reno, NV

Otoplasty (ear reshaping surgery) is performed at Charles P. Virden, MD in Reno, Nevada to improve the appearance of the ears. Ear reshaping or ear pinning can be used to correct overly large or small ears, ears that are disproportionate to the head, ears that are oddly placed, ears that stick out, and injuries that have changed the shape or position of the ears. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Charles Virden performs ear surgery on children as young as 4-years-old up and adults living in and around Reno and Tahoe. Ears that “stick out” are often the source of teasing and ridicule in young children. This teasing can have a devastating effect on the child’s psyche, so many parents chose to have ear surgery on their children before they begin school. However, otoplasty is not limited to children and may also be performed on older patients who want cosmetic improvements. Additionally, a patient’s ears may exhibit abnormal traits due to their genetic make-up or an accidental injury, such as losing an ear or part of an ear. Otoplasty is used successfully for each of these situations. Regardless of the procedure, patients have been pleased with the long-lasting improvements to their appearance offered by ear surgery by Dr. Virden.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure that normally requires only local anesthesia. Small incisions will be made around the ears to allow the surgeon better access to the cartilage. Cartilage can then be manipulated through removal, reshaping, and reforming to repair the ears for an improved, symmetrical look. Excess skin from the ear can also be removed, if needed. Ear surgery is commonly used to pin back protruding ears, repair earlobes, reshape, and resize to provide natural-looking results. The length of the surgery depends on the technique and the condition of the patient’s ears.

ANTICIPATED RESULTS

Following ear surgery, the ears will be dressed to provide protection. The dressing will remain in place for around 5 days for children and 2 days for adults. There’s little pain or discomfort associated with otoplasty, but patients should expect to experience tenderness and swelling. It’s crucial that pediatric patients not touch or bother their ears while they are healing. Results are long-standing and should provide years of positive benefits for patients.
