About Hormone Pellet Therapy

Dr. Charles Virden’s journey into hormone therapy started years ago. More and more he heard the cry from his patients who were having their exterior treated about their internal struggles. Struggles that were often caused by how they felt, patients would express symptom after symptom, saying that they did not “feel like themselves.” At this time, Dr. Virden was 55-years-old, a board-certified plastic surgeon with a thriving practice, and he was experiencing symptoms of aging. Dr. Virden realized that treating his patient was a whole patient package, and that he could make people not only look good, but feeling good by diagnosing and treating hormone imbalances. He wanted healthy aging to be made simple for himself and his patients. So many times hormones are dictated by a patients’ levels and patients are sometimes not treated because they have “normal levels,” but these “normal patients” did NOT feel normal, they had symptoms that were negatively impacting their life. He wanted a method that would give patients relief from symptoms. He looked at many therapies, as Dr. Virden wanted something natural that wouldn’t cause patients harm, something to give patients appropriate dosing of hormones, optimize their thyroid, and supplement their diet to support cellar and immune function. Finally, after years of searching, he found something. He couldn’t be happier to be offering hormone therapy that is symptom focused, optimized to balance hormones, takes your thyroid into account, and provides nutritional support. The healing possibilities are endless. We can’t stop aging, but at Charles P. Virden, MD in Reno, Nevada, we can now help you to age healthier.

What to Expect

Because the hormones used are completely natural, pellet therapy is ideal for patients who want the benefits of a natural hormone without the drawbacks of a synthetic. Pellets contain a natural plant source of estrogen and testosterone. A compounding pharmacist, using strict federal guidelines, compounds the estrogen and testosterone used in the pellets. This delivery system allows your body to use the right amount of hormone from the pellet as the blood flow surrounding the pellets picks up what is needed. Unique dosing is generated for each individual patient, so dosing is customized for what your body needs based on your bloodwork and symptoms. These pellets, which are smaller than a grain of rice, are placed in the fatty tissue underneath the skin. The hormone pellet implantation procedure is easily performed in the office. Pellets deliver pure, bio-identical hormones directly into the bloodstream 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for up to 5 months.

Hormone Therapy for Women

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy using the pellet method has changed the way women age. In the past, women died more frequently in childbirth, PMS was an imaginary problem, and menopause, with all its age-related infirmities, was just another stage of life to be endured and lived with. Today, we know that we don’t have to accept hormonal imbalance as a grim reality. Natural hormone replacement therapy has helped improve not only the quality of our lives, but also how long we live them. Some doctors continue to say that women should stop whining and embrace their menopausal woes, but why should they when the remedy is as simple as replacing missing hormones?

Estrogen Therapy for Women

Estrogen is a woman’s most important hormone. Without hormone replacement therapy, the loss of estrogen puts her at increased risk for premature ovary failure, osteoporosis, heart disease, colon cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, tooth loss, impaired vision, Parkinson’s disease, and diabetes. The longer a woman is without the protection of her own estrogen, the greater the risk for serious health consequences of these conditions. There are estrogen receptors in a variety of organs throughout the body and brain. That’s why hormonal imbalance produces different symptoms such as loss of skin elasticity, bone shrinkage, moodiness and cognitive decline. On the other hand, when estrogen levels rise as they do in the first week of menses, their overall effect is to increase the amount of serotonin available in the spaces between the brain’s nerve cells. That improves mood. Within the brain, estrogen may in fact act as a natural antidepressant and mood stabilizer. It is therefore essential that a woman suffering from premature ovary failure or surgical menopause receive treatment from an HRT physician who understands the many ramifications of the disease and is willing and able to meet her endocrine and emotional needs.

Testosterone Therapy for Women

Testosterone hormone therapy gives a woman her mental clarity, libido and muscle tone and mass. When this hormone is at low levels, women often complain of mental confusion, weight gain and poor muscle tone, even with regular exercise. The effect of hormone deficiency on the brain, muscle, bone, heart, and metabolism can be significant without hormone replacement therapy for women, and it can be dangerous to long-term health. The brain needs normal amounts of testosterone in balance with estrogen to produce serotonin, which supports emotional balance. When lacking in these hormones, a woman will experience emotional instability that often results in increased anxiety, irritability, sleep disturbances, anger, sadness, and depression. The musculoskeletal system is also adversely affected by the loss of testosterone. By not having bio-identical hormone therapy, the deficiency or imbalance of testosterone can lead to muscle atrophy, osteopenia, osteoporosis, and pain in the muscles and joints. Testosterone hormone therapy gives a woman her mental clarity, libido, muscle tone and mass. When this hormone is at low levels, women often complain of mental confusion, weight gain and poor muscle tone, even with regular exercise.

Hormone Therapy for Men

Men begin losing testosterone at a rate of 3% to 10% per year beginning at age 30. Current medical research now defines a male equivalent to menopause as andropause. Because the testosterone used is totally natural, it is ideal for men who want the benefits of a bio-identical hormone without the drawbacks of a synthetic. Symptoms of testosterone deficiency in men include fatigue, lack of mental acuity, loss of libido, and difficulty achieving or sustaining an erection. Hormonal needs for men have received national attention, but with marginal treatment options available. Hormonal treatments for men can be expensive, require daily consumption, and, in many cases, need to be carefully timed with their partner’s needs for normal sexual activities and pleasure. Bio-identical hormone pellet therapy is the only method of testosterone therapy that gives sustained and consistent testosterone levels throughout the day for four to six months without any “roller coaster” blood levels of testosterone, which can result in mood and energy fluctuations for the patient.

Anticipated Results

Pellet therapy uses hormones derived from natural plant sources to replicate the body’s normal hormonal levels. Patients have found that bio-identical hormone replacement therapy with pellet implants is extremely effective. Implants, placed under the skin, consistently release small, physiologic doses of hormones that provide optimal therapy. Unlike typical oral and transdermal forms of therapy, which produce “roller coaster” hormone levels, resulting in mood and energy fluctuations for the patient. The Hormone Pellet Therapy we use provides sustained hormone levels throughout the day for up to 3 – 5 months. Proper hormone therapy can help patient regain energy, muscle strength, and make it easier to lose weight. Patients may also experience increased mental clarity, better emotional health, and fewer age-related health problems.
