The sun’s radiation, stress, gravity, muscle atrophy, and other factors cause the skin to sag. Though these changes are gradual, wrinkles and other signs of aging can make individuals feel and look older than they really are. To take years off your lower face and neck, the office of Charles P. Virden, MD offers advanced facelift techniques for patients in Northwest Nevada near Reno and Northeast California near Tahoe. A facelift (rhytidectomy) is designed to smooth and firm the skin of the lower face and the neck, providing a fresh, youthful appearance.

about face lift surgery

Dr. Virden has successfully performed more than 1,000 facelifts and is a highly sought-after surgeon for facial cosmetic surgery. His understanding of facial anatomy and honed technical ability ensure that you receive safe, dramatic, and lasting results. Performing facelift surgery is an art. Just as an artist would use various strokes, colors, and textures to create a signature masterpiece, so too must the surgeon use a variety of techniques to create the best possible results with a facelift.

After extensive review, Dr. Virden has chosen not to offer “quick” or “lifestyle” type lifts. He prefers time-tested lifting techniques that will last for a very long time. Dr. Virden performs both full facelifts and mini lifts for patients with limited signs of aging. A “mini lift” is a term that describes a smaller version of the traditional facelift that is appropriate for the patient who has fullness in the mid-face and jowls, plus early neck aging. This occurs in patients around age 45 – 69. This procedure requires much less dissection and downtime than a traditional facelift.

Dr. Virden wants you to be clear that this smaller lift is held strongly by deep internal tissues and will last many years. It is NOT a QuickLift™ or a Lifestyle Lift®. Dr. Virden also utilizes his own technique of lifting the mid-face with small sutures creating a youthful cheek bone silhouette.

Ideal Face Lift Candidates

The best candidates for facelift surgery:

  • Have aged skin with lines, wrinkles, or sagging skin
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Desire a long-term, natural-looking solution

What to expect during your face lift

Facelift surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure at an accredited surgical facility where the patient is under general anesthesia. With carefully-placed incisions behind the ear and around the hairline, extraneous tissue, skin, and fat are removed from the face. The underlying tissue and muscles are tightened to create long-term results. The skin is repositioned and re-draped tighter for a smooth, natural appearance. Facelift surgery typically takes around 4 hours to complete.

anticipated results

After a facelift, a dressing will be placed over the surgical site and it will be replaced during the initial follow-up visit. It’s normal to experience pain and discomfort, which can be alleviated with medication prescribed by the surgeon. There should also be an expectation of swelling and bruising up to 2 weeks after surgery. After about 2 weeks, most patients can resume normal activities like going back to work and working out. After about 3 weeks, patients are able to notice the dramatic and natural results of the surgery. While facelifts offer long-term solutions, just like any other surgery, the effects are not permanent since the face will continue to naturally age. However, a patient will still look younger compared to if he or she had never had the surgery.
