Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Cosmetic Surgery)

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, can address visible signs of aging around your eyes. This cosmetic procedure targets wrinkles, puffiness, and hooding that contributes to a tired appearance.

Blepharoplasty in Reno, NV

The delicate skin around your eyes is one of the first areas to show signs of aging. Fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, and hooding can create a tired appearance, even when you feel energized.

Eyelid surgery can reverse these signs of aging and restore a brighter, more youthful look to your eyes. Dr. Virden achieves a natural look with minimal scarring, faster healing times, and a smoother recovery process.

This surgery can address both your upper and lower eyelids:

  • Upper eyelids: Drooping eyelids that obstruct vision or create a hooded appearance.
  • Lower eyelids: Puffiness or bags under your eyes that contribute to a tired look.
  • Both upper and lower eyelids: For total rejuvenation.
  • Asymmetry: Eyelid surgery can even be performed on one eye to correct asymmetry.

What to Expect During Eyelid Surgery

Prior to surgery, you’ll meet with Dr. Virden to discuss your goals and medical history.

Depending on a number of factors that our team will discuss with you, you’ll either have this procedure performed in the office under local anesthesia, or at an outpatient facility which requires general anesthesia. Your surgical options include:

  • Upper Eyelid Surgery: Incisions are made within your eyelid crease to remove excess skin and fat. This procedure takes 45 minutes to one hour.
  • Lower Eyelid Surgery: Incisions are placed discreetly along your lash line or under your eyelid to address puffiness or bags. This procedure takes around 45 minutes.
  • Combined Surgery: Both upper and lower lids may be addressed in one procedure, taking around 2 hours.

Post-Surgical Care and Recovery

Eyelid surgery is a quick recovery, totaling around two weeks. Expect some initial swelling and bruising around your eyes, which can be managed by cold compresses and medication. These effects typically subside within a few days.

Most patients resume normal activities within a week and enjoy natural-looking, refreshed eyes with minimal scarring. Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing and results.

Eyelid Plastic Surgery FAQs

Blepharoplasty is also known as eyelid surgery and is a cosmetic procedure meant to address visible signs of aging around your eyes. You can get this procedure done on your upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both at once to target concerns like drooping upper eyelids, puffiness, or bags under your eyes. The results create a brighter, more youthful appearance.

There isn’t a single “best age” to get eyelid surgery, but people opt in when their appearance is impacted by aging around their eyes. Many people are over 40 with a large portion over 55, but people in their 30s may also qualify as ideal candidates depending on their needs.

It isn’t necessarily about how “bad” your eyelids are, but rather how the condition of your eyelids affects you. Think about how droopy, puffy, or wrinkled your eyelids are, or how they impact your self-confidence. It’s always best to consult a qualified plastic surgeon to see if eyelid surgery is right for you.

While not permanent, results can be long-lasting. With proper care, upper eyelids might stay youthful for five to seven years, while lower lids may see improvement for the rest of your life. Sun protection, healthy habits, and genetics all play a role in how long you’ll enjoy your blepharoplasty results.

Blepharoplasty carries potential side effects, most commonly temporary dryness, swelling, and blurred vision. Less frequent complications involve eyelid position, like difficulty closing your eyes or drooping of the upper lid. Your doctor will explain the procedure and associated risks during your consultation.

With proper care, blepharoplasty results can last for many years. Upper eyelids may see improvement for five to seven years while lower eyelids can potentially be long-lasting or even permanent.

Blepharoplasty is considered a cosmetic surgery and is not covered by insurance. However, if drooping upper eyelids severely obstruct your vision, insurance may cover corrective surgery. Always consult your insurance provider beforehand, but be prepared for potential out-of-pocket costs if insurance doesn’t cover your procedure.
