Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injectable gels used to restore lost volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial features. At Virden MD, we use JUVÉDERM®, a popular dermal filler brand made of hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in your skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts water, adding plumpness and hydration to treated areas.

What to Expect with a Dermal Filler Procedure

During your personalized consultation, our experienced nurse practitioners Michelle or Megan will talk through your pain points, overall goals, and recommend the ideal JUVÉDERM® formula for you. They will also discuss injection sites so you’re comfortable with the procedure.

JUVÉDERM® contains lidocaine for comfort, so additional numbing is often not necessary. The filler is gently injected with a fine needle into the targeted areas—like your lips, cheeks, or wrinkles—to achieve natural-looking results. You might feel a slight pinch or tingle.

The entire procedure typically takes 30 to 45 minutes.

You’ll see a noticeable improvement in your treated areas right after your session. Even better, you can enjoy your natural-looking enhancements for up to one year.

There may be some slight redness or swelling in the treated area, but these effects are temporary and typically fade quickly. JUVÉDERM® requires no downtime, so you can get back to your day immediately.

Dermal Filler FAQs

Dermal fillers don’t last forever, but longevity depends on several factors, including how quickly your body breaks down the filler.

Different fillers have varying lifespans. Hyaluronic acid fillers, the most common type, typically last 6 to 12 months. Fillers used in areas with more movement, like your lips, break down faster and last around 6 to 9 months. Areas with less movement, like your cheeks, can last up to 12 to 18 months.

Most people like to re-treat annually, but there are individual differences.

The choice is up to you and what you’re looking for because they are two very different treatments.

BOTOX® is ideal for relaxing muscles that cause wrinkles due to facial expressions. It targets frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet with results typically lasting 3 to 4 months. (If you’re looking to fix your gummy smile, BOTOX® is better suited for this as opposed to dermal fillers.)

Dermal fillers add volume and fullness to areas that have lost it due to aging. They’re used for plumping lips, smoothing smile lines, and enhancing cheeks. Results depend on the filler type, lasting anywhere from 6 months to 18 months.

Dermal fillers are a broader category, while lip fillers are a specific kind of dermal filler designed for plumping and shaping your lips. So yes, all lip fillers are dermal fillers, but not all dermal fillers are lip fillers.

Dermal fillers are a type of injection, but not all injections are dermal fillers. Injections is a broad term that also includes procedures like BOTOX®.

Even though there may be some slight redness, swelling, or bruising in the treated area, you can get back to your day immediately.

Getting a good sleep after dermal fillers promotes healing and reduces potential side effects. If you fall asleep on your face, you’ll be fine, but avoid aggressive pressure (think a massage with your head in the cradle) on your face for 4 days.
