Dermal Fillers for Lips

Dermal fillers allow for a fuller, more youthful look by adding volume and definition. They help smooth out lip lines, improve hydration, and correct asymmetry for a natural, refreshed look. At Virden MD, we use the popular dermal filler brand, JUVÉDERM®, to treat you. We will likely use the JUVÉDERM® products VOLBELLA® XC or ULTRA XC for lip augmentation. VOLBELLA® XC is used to enhance your lips, while ULTRA XC adds volume and smooths lines.

what to expect

Our experienced nurse practitioners will walk you through the procedure so you’re more than comfortable. JUVÉDERM® contains lidocaine, so additional numbing for comfort isn’t often necessary. Your nurse practitioner will gently inject the targeted area with a fine needle and you may feel a slight pinch or tingle. The procedure takes 30 to 45 minutes.

While you may experience some redness or swelling in the treated area, these effects are temporary and usually fade quickly. You’ll notice improvement right after your session.

fat transfer

Fat transfer is a surgical lip augmentation procedure where Dr. Virden harvests fat from another part of your body and injects it into your lips to increase their volume and fullness. This fat usually comes from your abdomen, thighs, or buttocks. The benefit of fat transfer is that fat is a natural tissue and the results are a more authentic appearance. People enjoy long-lasting results with minimal downtime from a fat transfer procedure.

Following your procedure, you may experience swelling, bruising, or numbness in your lips and the donor area. These effects are normal and will gradually subside. Most people return to normal activities within a few days, but more strenuous activities may take a few weeks.

While individual results do vary, you can expect a more natural look with fuller, more defined lips.

what to expect

You may be given local or general anesthesia, depending on your individual situation. Dr. Virden will make a small incision in what is called the donor area, the part of your body where the fat is taken from. Once extracted, the fat is cleaned, processed, and prepared for injection. Dr. Virden then injects the purified fat into your lips and carefully sculpts your desired shape and fullness.

This procedure takes between 1 to 2 hours.

Your surgeon will give you local anesthesia to help numb the area. Dr. Virden will make small incisions below your nose to remove excess tissue. This reveals a more natural lip.

You may experience swelling, bruising, or temporary numbness around the incision area. While recovery can take several weeks, you should see improvement in swelling and bruising within the first week.

Results of a lip lift may appear subtle, but they are impactful. You can expect a more youthful and balanced appearance, and may notice that shorter distance between your nose and upper lip.
