About Ear Surgery
Otoplasty (ear reshaping surgery) is performed at Charles P. Virden, MD in Reno, Nevada to improve the appearance of the ears. Ear reshaping or ear pinning can be used to correct overly large or small ears, ears that are disproportionate to the head, ears that are oddly placed, ears that stick out, and injuries that have changed the shape or position of the ears. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Charles Virden performs ear surgery on children as young as 4-years-old up and adults living in and around Reno and Tahoe. Ears that “stick out” are often the source of teasing and ridicule in young children. This teasing can have a devastating effect on the child’s psyche, so many parents chose to have ear surgery on their children before they begin school. However, otoplasty is not limited to children and may also be performed on older patients who want cosmetic improvements. Additionally, a patient's ears may exhibit abnormal traits due to their genetic make-up or an accidental injury, such as losing an ear or part of an ear. Otoplasty is used successfully for each of these situations. Regardless of the procedure, patients have been pleased with the long-lasting improvements to their appearance offered by ear surgery by Dr. Virden.
The best candidates for ear reconstruction surgery:
- Have prominent, sticking out, misaligned, misshapen, or disproportionate ears
- Can be as young as 5 or 6 to correct ear abnormalities
- Have anxiety about the look of their ears
- Desire a long-term solution
- Desire a natural look
"His kindness and passion for what he does is beyond what I know as a scrub tech.... I am his patient now and am so excited for what's to come."- A.S. / Facebook / Mar 27, 2021
"I had breast augmentation surgery from Dr. Virden 3 years ago and I could not be happier with the results. He was very thorough in explaining everything I could expect after surgery. To this day people are still impressed with the job he did and how natural my breasts look and feel."- J.L. / Yelp / Mar 18, 2021

"In November, 1996 I had my first surgery a tummy tuck, in August of 2002 I had a facelift. Both surgeries went well and I can not thank Dr. Virden for his talent and kindness. I followed his advice, taking care of my skin and avoiding too much sun. I don't won't to brag but I looked 20 plus years younger and recovered quickly and felt great within days after the surgery, I went back on tour singing within 2 weeks. Now 24 years later I still look 20 years younger with exception to a little sagging under the eyes. I'm in great shape for 78 years old but again you would never know it. I feel great get plenty of exercise a good diet but would like to eliminate the need for friends to say I need to get more sleep, I look great but need to get more sleep. So I'm looking forward to visiting Doctor Virden again for a little surgery that will stop there worry. When you feel that confident about a Special Doctor you want to share your gratitude to others."- Anonymous / RateMDs / Feb 09, 2021
"Knowledgeable and compassionate, always available. He removed my 23yr old implants leaving my natural breast spectacular. Dr. Virden assured me that I didn't need a lift, and he was correct. I couldn't be happier with my results and his whole team. They all treated me like family through the whole process and this is very important to me. I would never go anywhere else!"- V.R. / Facebook / Dec 27, 2020
What to Expect
Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure that normally requires only local anesthesia. Small incisions will be made around the ears to allow the surgeon better access to the cartilage. Cartilage can then be manipulated through removal, reshaping, and reforming to repair the ears for an improved, symmetrical look. Excess skin from the ear can also be removed, if needed. Ear surgery is commonly used to pin back protruding ears, repair earlobes, reshape, and resize to provide natural-looking results. The length of the surgery depends on the technique and the condition of the patient's ears.
Following ear surgery, the ears will be dressed to provide protection. The dressing will remain in place for around 5 days for children and 2 days for adults. There’s little pain or discomfort associated with otoplasty, but patients should expect to experience tenderness and swelling. It’s crucial that pediatric patients not touch or bother their ears while they are healing. Results are long-standing and should provide years of positive benefits for patients.
